Advanced Aircrew Academy’s Winter Operations/Surface Contamination eLearning module updated
  • September 29, 2015
Several hazards associated with flight operations in the winter, such as extreme cold temperatures, contaminated runways, and inflight and ground icing conditions, can require us to dust off those cold weather operating skills and knowledge.

Advanced Aircrew Academy has published an update to our Winter Operations module. What's new in the eLearning module for the 2015/2016 winter season?
  • The FAA has published 2015-2016 Holdover Time Tables.
  • FAA Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) 15009 has been published, addressing the hazards of landing on wet runways.
  • FAA Information for Operators (InFO) 15002 with an update on Cold Temperature Restricted Airports.
  • FAA SAFO 06012 with information on the correlation between runway friction reports and braking action.
  • New content outlining the effects of Ice Pellets and Hail with Allowance Times.
  • New Holdover Time Tables reflect the removal of generic Type III times.

Applying cold temperature corrections to certain instrument approaches has changed from being recommended to being mandatory. For more information, see the Let the Winter Games Begin blog post. Or, better yet, enroll in Advanced Aircrew Academy's Winter Operations / Surface Contamination eLearning module. The module has been updated with examples on how to apply the correction.
