Runway Excursion

Runway Excursion

On average, there is one business aviation runway excursion per week in the United States, making it the most frequent business aviation incident. The Runway Excursion module reviews the top safety focus areas to prevent runway excursions in business aviation organized through a flight segment from preflight, takeoff, enroute, landing, and debrief. Each focus area highlights recent business aviation runway excursions with lessons learned as a takeaway.

Our subject matter expert monitors safety reporting databases weekly to ensure the module is updated with the latest trends in business aviation runway excursions.

The module includes a review of Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) 11011, 16008, 16009, and 18009; Information for Operators (InFO) 17009; Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Excursions (GAPPRE); and Advisory Circular 91-79B Aircraft Landing Performance and Runway Excursion Mitigation.

There is no specific Part 135 requirement for training on Runway Excursions. Runway Excursion training can be added to the pilot training curriculums to mitigate the risk of an excursion in your flight operation.

This module complies with the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) training requirement for "Runway Excursions" defined in Chapter 8 of IS-BAO. The module is not required by the Business Aviation Safety Consortium (BASC) standard. Many BASC operators choose to add Runway Excursion training to mitigate the risk of an excursion.
